Staff Sergeant Robert Bales, a decorated 38-year-old veteran of four combat tours in Iraq and Afghanistan, also was charged with six counts each of assault and attempted murder for attacking two other adults and four children in the March 11 shooting spree, a U.S. armed forces statement said.
I have said for several years that many people cannot handle multiple tours of war. While some can and handle it okay, others cannot. Many people volunteered for 2 and 3 tours in Vietnam and while they still have issues, they did not commit multiple murders... at least none that we know of.
Sgt. Bales had too much combat. Too much time in iraq and afghanistan. He should have been sent home over a year ago and given time to heal before sending him back. While some can volunteer, most are just sent back with a short break in between tours. His actions come as no surprise and the US military should not be shocked.
